Policy brief: are same-sex cohabitors less healthy than people in other union statuses?

چکیده
Union status, such as cohabitation or marriage, is clearly related to health. But this basic research finding is based primarily on heterosexual unions. In this study, the authors ask how living in a same-sex cohabiting union is associated with health. To answer this question, the authors compared the health of same-sex cohabitors with the health of people who are in different-sex married, different-sex cohabiting, divorced, widowed, and never-married single union statuses. The authors further examined the role of gender, race-ethnicity, and socioeconomic factors—such as income, education level, and health insurance—in shaping health differences across union statuses.

Assortative matching among same-sex and different-sex couples in the United States, 1990-2000.
Same-sex couples are less likely to be homogamous than different-sex couples on a variety of characteristics including race/ethnicity, age, and education. This study confirms results from previous studies which used 1990 U.S. census data and extends previous analyses to examine changes from 1990 to 2000. We find that same-sex male cohabitors are generally the least likely to resemble one anothe...

Cohabitors and married people who cohabited before marriage have higher risks of union dissolution than people who married without prior cohabitation. However, these differences in union stability vary markedly between countries. We hypothesize that the impact of cohabitation on union stability depends on how far cohabitation has diffused within a society. We test this hypothesis with data from...

A legacy of research finds that marriage is associated with good health. Yet same-sex cohabitors cannot marry in most states in the United States and therefore may not receive the health benefits associated with marriage. We use pooled data from the 1997 to 2009 National Health Interview Surveys to compare the self-rated health of same-sex cohabiting men (n = 1,659) and same-sex cohabiting wome...

The rapid growth in cohabitation in recent decades has coincided with a burgeoning literature on the topic. Yet despite a sustained increase in cohabitation among middle-aged and older adults, this group has received little research attention. Close relationships are integral to well-being and the quality of these relationships has consequences for health, especially among older adults. We use ...

The present study demonstrates that despite their short length, the quality of cohabiting unions varies with time. Cohabitors...
